Why Metal Roofing is the Eco-Sustainable Choice For Your Home

Corrugated Metal Roofing and CladdingMany home / cottage owners and commercial building designers are concerned about the ecological footprint of their building. When constructing new or renovating an existing building (roofing or cladding), one of the factors to consider is how eco-sustainable a building material is. All of the products manufactured and distributed by Vicwest are engineered to provide the most eco-responsible options available in the industry. And our consulting and engineering teams have superior experience with finishes, substrates, reflectance, emissivity and insulation measures – all of which add up to energy savings!

Let's look at some of the environmental benefits of choosing metal roofing or cladding over asphalt, clay, wood shingles, or other materials.

Recycling

Our metal roofs contain up to 30 per cent recycled material and are 100 per cent recyclable at the end of their service life. This is not the case for other roofing materials that take up significant landfill space at the end of their life.

Long Service Life Results in Less Consumed Resources

A metal roof is not only low maintenance, but lasts up to 4 times as long as traditional roofing material. The energy expended in its manufacture, installation, upkeep, and renovation is significantly less than other materials. The result of a longer lasting roof, is less material consumption than other roofing materials, that could be replaced 2-3 times during the life time of a metal roof.

Temperature Regulating

Metal roofing and cladding is much more energy-efficient in that they naturally reflect light keeping your home or building cooler in the summer and, when properly insulated, warmer in the winter. When a heat-deflecting coating is applied or a light coloured “cool roof” is selected, metal roofs can reduce summer energy costs by up to 40 per cent. Our Metal Roofing Systems can reduce cooling consumption during summer months. Metal reflects the majority of the sun’s rays, so it doesn’t retain as much heat as wood, asphalt shingles, tile or cement. This means a metal roof could help your attic stay cooler longer. The bottom line: significantly lower energy bills and a longer lifespan for your cooling equipment. This results in less energy consumed by the building, indirectly reducing smog and pollution, and generating energy savings for the building owner.

Certifications

GreenBuildingCouncil-1.pngOur metal roofing profiles can help building designers earn LEED® certification. When installed on site, Vicwest Metal Roofing and Cladding Systems will not release VOC’s (Volatile organic compounds) into the atmosphere. This also applies to interior installations. At Vicwest, we firmly believe that having environmentally responsible products is only part of the equation. That is why all of our manufacturing processes are designed to produce an absolute minimum impact on the environment and display near zero potential for global warming.
